The assessment process
A clear, supportive and thorough process — from your first enquiry to a detailed written report.
Every assessment I carry out follows the latest SASC (SpLD Assessment Standards Committee) guidelines, using validated, up-to-date assessment tools. The process is designed to be as straightforward and stress-free as possible for both children and their families.
Who is the assessment for?
I assess children and young people up to the age of 18. Assessments are suitable for children at primary school, secondary school or in further education who are experiencing difficulties with reading, writing, spelling, phonological processing or working memory — or where a parent, teacher or SENCO suspects dyslexia may be a factor.
Step by step
Initial enquiry
Get in touch by phone or email to discuss your child's needs. I will explain the assessment process, answer any questions you have and confirm whether a diagnostic assessment is appropriate. There is no obligation at this stage.
Background information
Before the assessment, I will ask you to complete a short background questionnaire covering your child's developmental history, school experience and any previous assessments or interventions. This helps me tailor the session and ensures nothing important is missed.
The assessment session
The assessment takes place in person and typically lasts between three and four hours, with breaks built in. I use a range of SASC-approved standardised tests to assess reading, writing, spelling, phonological processing, working memory and processing speed. The session is paced to the child — calm, unhurried and free from pressure.
Scoring and analysis
Following the session, I score and analyse all results carefully. This involves comparing your child's performance across different areas to build a detailed and accurate picture of their learning profile — identifying both strengths and areas of difficulty.
Written report
You will receive a comprehensive written report, usually within two weeks of the assessment. The report includes a full diagnostic profile, a clear conclusion and practical recommendations for home, school and — where relevant — exam access arrangements.
Follow-up support
I am happy to discuss the report findings with you once you have had time to read it. I can also liaise with your child's school or SENCO if needed, to help ensure the recommendations are understood and acted upon.
Assessment tools used
All tools used are current, standardised and approved by SASC. They may include measures of single word reading, reading fluency, spelling, phonological awareness, working memory, processing speed and non-verbal reasoning. The specific battery is tailored to each child based on their age and the nature of their difficulties.
SASC-aligned reports
All reports are written in line with SASC guidelines, which means they are recognised by schools, local authorities and examination boards across the UK. A SASC-aligned report is the standard required for applications for exam access arrangements, EHCP evidence and specialist support in further education.
